Video game layoffs statistics for 2026 showing annual job losses, layoff forecasts, major employer cuts, developer survey data, AI impact, and games industry funding.

By August 11, 2026, roughly 10,140 video game layoffs had been announced for the year, already more than the whole of 2025. That figure comes from Amir Satvat’s tracker, presented in his Gamescom Dev opening keynote and reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

Below are the verified numbers: annual counts, 2026 forecast revisions, developer survey data, the employers behind the biggest rounds, and the funding picture underneath.

How Many Video Game Layoffs Have Happened In 2026?

Satvat put his December 2025 expectation for 2026 at around 7,500 redundancies. After the first half of the year he revised that to 14,666, close to the 15,631 he recorded for 2024.

The separate ASGC layoffs tracker, which Satvat also maintains, ran a parallel series. Its January reading of 8,025 climbed twice in July. The two counts use different cutoff rules, which is why they land 407 apart.

Announced layoffs are not the same as completed separations. Satvat has said the timing of Microsoft’s remaining cuts is unclear and that he assumes they fall in 2026 until better information arrives.

Video Game Layoffs By Year, 2022 To 2025

Matthew Ball’s State of Video Gaming 2026 report puts the four-year total at 44,000 announced job losses. The 2025 count broke the pattern of each post-pandemic year exceeding the last.

YearAnnounced video game layoffs
20228,500
202310,500
202415,650
20259,200

Source: Matthew Ball, State of Video Gaming 2026 (Epyllion), published February 17, 2026; figures cover calendar years 2022 to 2025

The report states 2025 came in 40% below 2024. Note that Satvat’s own tracker logs 2024 at 15,631 rather than 15,650, a gap of 19 between two counts of the same year.

Geography is lopsided. North America absorbed 61% of layoffs across 2022 to 2025, Europe 16%. In mid-2025, open job postings told a different story: North America held 22% of the global total, and so did Europe.

What The GDC Survey Says About Video Game Layoffs

GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry drew responses from more than 2,300 game industry professionals. Each row below carries a different denominator, so the shares are not comparable across rows.

AAA respondents reported layoffs at their companies at twice the rate of indie respondents. GDC notes the reverse on personal impact: indie staff were more likely to say they were laid off themselves.

Do Game Workers Want A Union?

Among US-based respondents, 82% support unionization of game industry workers, 5% oppose it and 13% are unsure. Support runs to 88% among those laid off in the past two years.

Across all respondents, 10% belong to an industry-wide union such as United Videogame Workers-CWA and 2% to a company union. A further 62% said they were interested in joining one. Those shares sit on different bases and should not be subtracted from each other.

Which Employers Drove Video Game Layoffs In 2026?

Xbox announced what Microsoft called the most significant restructure in its history on July 6, 2026. Ubisoft ran a separate, longer contraction that its own accounts document.

Compulsion Games and Double Fine return to independence with their IP catalogues. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have signed to join new owners. Arkane Lyon entered a Works Council consultation, and its outcome is not yet decided.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma gave a direct reason in the memo: in a typical year the division lost 64 cents for every dollar invested. Studio hiring patterns since 2018 shaped that structure, as our breakdown of patch and update cadence shows on the live-service side.

Ubisoft ended March 2026 with 16,590 employees, down by around 1,200 on the year. The company posted an IFRS operating loss of €1,322.3 million against €196.5 million a year earlier, discontinued 7 projects and delayed 6.

Why Video Game Layoffs Rose As Revenue Hit A Record

Player spending and investor spending moved apart in 2025. Global games content sales reached an all-time high of roughly $195.6 billion, up 5% year over year, while private funding fell 55%.

Development spending stayed high. The industry spent over $40 billion building games for the second year running across mobile, PC and console, while content investment as a share of net revenues hit a seven-year low outside the pandemic.

Ball reports that operating profits sit below 2019 levels despite a 40% rise in consumer spending, once China and platform-owning developers are excluded. China accounts for 20% of global player spending and 38% of growth, with 84% of Chinese player spend going to Chinese titles.

Monetisation shifted alongside it, as seen in battle pass revenue patterns and in the used game resale market. Cost structures moved too, which our language and localisation cost data tracks.

Is Generative AI Behind Video Game Layoffs?

No source in this data set links AI adoption to specific layoffs. What GDC measures is sentiment and usage, and the two move at different speeds.

Negative sentiment reached 52% in the 2026 survey, from 30% a year earlier and 18% the year before that. Positive sentiment fell to about 7%, down from 13% in the 2025 report.

Usage sits at 36% of game industry professionals. Within that, 30% of respondents at game studios use AI tools against 58% at publishing companies, support teams and marketing or PR firms.

Unfavourable views cluster by discipline: 64% in visual and technical art, 63% in game design and narrative, 59% in programming. Adoption figures across the wider development pipeline appear in our AI in game development statistics.

What Video Game Layoffs Data Points To Next

Xbox’s remaining 1,600 cuts are scheduled but not complete, and Satvat has flagged that some may land outside 2026. Ubisoft guides to free cash flow consumption of no more than €500 million in FY2026-27 and a return to positive free cash flow in FY2027-28.

Capital remains the constraint. Early-stage funding at just over $200 million a quarter is a fraction of its 2021 peak, and that gap sits underneath studio decisions regardless of how 2026 revenue closes. Adjacent segments hold up differently, as esports team valuation figures and Steam Deck ownership data show.
