Dragon Warrior is a turn-based role-playing game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix for the NES, the first entry in the series and a foundational console RPG. The lone Hero, descendant of Erdrick, explores the kingdom of Alefgard — fighting one-on-one random battles, gaining levels and gold, and buying gear — to rescue Princess Gwaelin and defeat the Dragonlord.
