How Much Does It Cost to Make a Game in 2026?

AAA budgets in the US and Canada run to $300 million or more, according to Jason Schreier. He described this as the range he hears from developers, and said some budgets run far higher.

Schreier said most of that money goes to developer salaries and overhead, not executive pay. He added that studios outside North America often spend less because labor costs less.

His break-even math assumes a $70 digital sale that nets about $49 after a 30% store cut. On that basis, a $300 million game needs more than 6 million sales before marketing.

What Does a Mid-Budget Game Cost?

Sandfall Interactive told The New York Times that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cost less than $10 million. Publisher funding let the studio grow its core team to about 30 people.

Sandfall outsourced battle animations and relied on outside partners for localization and marketing. Self-funded projects usually work with far less, as these indie game revenue and budget figures show.

What Happens When Game Development Costs Aren’t Recovered?

Sony wrote down ¥120.1 billion of Bungie’s intangible and other assets across fiscal 2025, which ended March 31, 2026. The charge came in two parts.

The first ¥31.5 billion landed in Q2, and ¥88.6 billion followed in Q4. Sony linked the Q2 charge to Destiny 2 sales and engagement falling short of its expectations at the time of the deal.

FAQs

How much does it cost to make a AAA game?

About $300 million or more for AAA projects in the US and Canada, per Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier in March 2026. He called it a range he hears from developers, since publishers rarely disclose budgets.

How much do big publishers spend on game development each year?

EA reported $2,828 million in R&D for fiscal 2026, 38% of net revenue. Ubisoft recorded €1,855.9 million in non-IFRS R&D expenses for 2025-26, equal to 121.7% of net bookings.

How much does it cost to make an AA or indie-scale game?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cost under $10 million, Sandfall Interactive told The New York Times in December 2025. Its core team numbered about 30 people, with animation and localization work outsourced.

Why do Reddit threads say AAA games need 6 million sales to break even?

The figure comes from Jason Schreier’s March 2026 math. A $70 digital sale nets about $49 after a 30% store cut, so a $300 million game needs over 6 million sales before marketing.

What is the most expensive part of game development?

Staff. Schreier says salaries and overhead make up most AAA budgets. EA attributed $144 million of its $259 million fiscal 2026 R&D increase to personnel-related costs.
