Ask a group why a dungeon felt harder this week than last and the answer is almost always the affix. Affixes are the weekly modifiers applied to Mythic Keystone dungeons, and in Midnight Season 2 they are arranged in layers rather than stacked all at once — which makes them considerably more legible than in previous seasons, provided you know the layout.
That layering is the main reason mythic plus feels unpredictable to players who do not track the weekly rotation: the variation is systematic, it just is not visible unless you look for it.
The layered structure
Season 2 applies affixes by keystone level, not uniformly:
| Affix | Active range | Behaviour |
| Lindormi’s Guidance | +2 to +5 | Always present at low keys, removed at +6 |
| Xal’atath’s Bargain | +5 to +11 | One of four variants, rotates weekly |
| Tyrannical / Fortified | +7 and above | Alternates week to week |
| Xal’atath’s Guile | +12 and above | Replaces the Bargain, adds the full timer penalty |
Reading that table tells you something useful immediately. Below +5 there is effectively no weekly variation. Between +7 and +11 there are two independent modifiers interacting at once. From +12 the weekly lottery ends and the timer becomes the whole test.
What that means in practice?
The +7 to +11 band is where week-to-week planning pays off. A group with heavy area damage handles some Bargain variants comfortably and struggles with others; the Tyrannical/Fortified alternation shifts difficulty between bosses and trash packs.
Experienced groups push their highest keys on favourable weeks and use unfavourable ones for farming or for alts.
Groups that do not track the rotation experience the same content as randomly inconsistent, which is a genuinely demoralising way to play.
It is also the most common reason players describe mythic plus as unpredictable — the variation is systematic, it just is not visible unless you are looking for it.
Tyrannical and Fortified
These two are the oldest affixes in the system and they do the same job in opposite directions. Fortified strengthens non-boss enemies; Tyrannical strengthens bosses. They alternate weekly from +7 upward.
The practical difference is about where a run fails. On a Fortified week, groups die in trash packs and lose time to route mistakes.
On a Tyrannical week, the trash is manageable and the bosses are where attempts end. Routes are usually adjusted accordingly — more pulls skipped on Fortified, more cooldowns saved on Tyrannical.
Lindormi’s Guidance
Present from +2 and removed at +6, this is the low-key affix. Its role is structural rather than difficult: it exists to give the entry range of keys a distinct character before the real modifiers arrive.
Because it disappears at +6, the jump from +6 to +7 is one of the sharpest in the season — one affix leaves and a stronger one arrives at the same time.
The Bargain variants
Xal’atath’s Bargain rotates weekly through four variants across the +5 to +11 range. Each changes the shape of a pull rather than simply adding damage, which is why group composition matters so much in this band.
At +12 the Bargain is removed entirely. That is a design choice worth noting: the highest keys are not the ones with the most modifiers, they are the ones with the fewest and the strictest timer.
The eight dungeons it applies to
Season 2 runs an eight-dungeon pool: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, King’s Rest, Temple of Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools.
Five are Midnight dungeons — Altar of Fangs is new and the shortest at three bosses — and three return from Battle for Azeroth and Dragonflight.
A small pool means affixes carry more of the week’s identity. With eight fixed layouts learned within a month, the modifier becomes the main source of variation for the rest of the season.
Where the rewards stop?
Affix knowledge is most valuable in the range where it affects gearing, and that range has a hard edge.
- +2 entry sits around item level 285
- Keys through +6 drop Champion-track gear
- +10 unlocks a Myth-track Great Vault item at 318 and caps dungeon rewards at Hero 3/6, 311
- Above +10, the gear stops improving
So the affix band that matters most for gear is +7 to +10 — precisely the band where two modifiers interact. Above that, affix planning is about score rather than progression.
Fitting the week together
Mythic+ is one of three inputs to the Great Vault. The others are raid bosses — Venomous Abyss, eight bosses ending at Ula’tek — and the Tidebound Grotto Lair, whose Mythic kill counts toward the raid slot.
Season 2 opened on 18 August on North American realms and 19 August in Europe, carried by patch 12.1, The Curse of Ula’tek. The raid’s Raid Finder wings released over five weeks, with the last opening on 8 September; all are now available.
What the next patch adds?
Patch 12.1.5, The Promise of Tomorrow, was revealed on 3 September and is on the public test realm. It brings a story campaign, the one-boss Unbinding of Kith’ix raid, an Aqir Invasion outdoor event, a solo-friendly content type called Labyrinths, and a new upgrade currency, Ascendant Venomstones. No release date has been confirmed.
A new upgrade currency typically extends existing gear rather than replacing it, which would keep keys relevant later into the season than they otherwise would be.
The short version
Check the affix on reset day. Below +5 it barely matters. Between +7 and +11 it decides which keys are worth attempting this week.
At +12 and above, stop thinking about affixes and start thinking about the clock. And remember that all of this is score once you pass +10 — the gearing question was settled there.
Building a route around the week
Experienced groups do not use the same route every week, and the reason is the affix layering rather than preference.
On a Fortified week, trash is dangerous and bosses are not. Routes shrink: fewer optional packs, more skips, damage saved for the unavoidable pulls. The completion percentage still has to be met, so the skill is in choosing which packs give the most progress for the least risk.
On a Tyrannical week, the opposite. Trash can be pulled generously, cooldowns are held for bosses, and the route expands because the dangerous part of the dungeon is fixed rather than variable.
| Week type | Route shape | Where attempts fail |
| Fortified | Tight, skip-heavy | Trash packs, route errors |
| Tyrannical | Broad, boss-focused | Boss damage checks |
Layered on top of that is the weekly Xal’atath’s Bargain variant, active from +5 through +11. Some variants punish grouped-up pulls; others punish spread positioning. A route that works under one can be actively wrong under another.
This is why groups that plan around the week outperform groups that do not by a wide margin — and why the same player can feel competent one week and lost the next without anything about their own play having changed.
