Elder Scrolls Online cross-platform guide showing PC and Mac crossplay, console platform separation, cross-save limitations, and cross-generation support in 2026.

Is Elder Scrolls Online Cross Platform in 2026?

Partly. Elder Scrolls Online crossplay works between PC and Mac only. PlayStation and Xbox use separate megaservers without cross-save.

ZeniMax Online Studios confirmed in October 2025 that crossplay and cross-progression are in development. At the April 2026 content reveal, the studio said neither feature arrives this year.

Until then, the platform you buy on decides who you can play with.

TL;DR – Elder Scrolls Online Crossplay Status

Crossplay: PC only

Consoles: Same-platform only

Mobile: No multiplayer

Cross-save: Not supported

Cross-generation: PS4 and PS5 share a megaserver, as do Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with free character migration since June 2021.

Crossplay vs Cross-Platform vs Cross-Save In Elder Scrolls Online

These three terms get mixed up a lot. In ESO they mean very different things.

FeatureSupported
Cross-platform availabilityYes
CrossplayPC Only
Cross-saveNo

Cross-platform availability just means ESO is sold on PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox. Crossplay is limited to Windows and Mac users on the same PC megaserver. One account works on both.

Cross-save does not exist yet. A character built on Xbox cannot move to PlayStation or PC.

ZeniMax plans to ship crossplay and cross-progression in one update, according to executive producer Susan Kath in a PC Gamer interview. Few MMOs have pulled that off, since it means merging years of separate economies and character data.

ESO Plus memberships and Crown purchases are also tied to each platform. Buying a subscription on PlayStation gives nothing on PC.

Which Platforms Can Play Elder Scrolls Online Together?

Here’s how multiplayer actually works in Elder Scrolls Online:

Platform pairingCrossplay
PC / Mac / Linux✔ Yes
PC ↔ ConsoleNo
PlayStation ↔ XboxNo
Xbox ↔ SwitchNo (ESO is not on Switch)
MobileNo multiplayer

Each platform family runs its own North American and European megaservers. Linux players connect through Steam and Proton, landing on the same PC servers.

Guild members on PlayStation cannot group with friends on Xbox. That split has held since the console launch in June 2015.

Blizzard avoided the problem by keeping World of Warcraft on PC. ESO chose consoles early, and the separate servers came with that decision.

What Is The Best Platform For Elder Scrolls Online?

PC

Add-ons, PTS access, mouse controls

Mac

Shared PC servers, native client

PlayStation 5

Xbox Series X|S

Game Pass access, 60fps mode

Steam Deck

PC gets add-on support and the busiest servers, reflected in Steam usage data. Console buyers can compare install bases in our PS5 and Xbox Series X sales figures first.

FAQs

Is Elder Scrolls Online cross platform between PC and Xbox?

No. PC and Xbox players use separate megaservers in Elder Scrolls Online. Only Windows and Mac share servers today. Xbox players can check wider Xbox user trends for platform context.

Will Elder Scrolls Online Ever Be Cross Platform?

Yes, eventually. Executive producer Susan Kath said crossplay and cross-progression will launch together. ZeniMax confirmed in April 2026 that neither feature is coming this year, which points to 2027 at the earliest.

Is Elder Scrolls Online co-op cross platform?

Only on PC and Mac. Group dungeons, trials and PvP stay locked to one platform family. Games like Elden Ring follow a similar same-platform rule for co-op.

Does Elder Scrolls Online support crossplay on consoles?

Not yet. PlayStation and Xbox players cannot group, trade or chat across platforms. Compare how Red Dead Online and Dead by Daylight handle console multiplayer.
